Polished Blue Smithsonite Aragonite Standing Freeforms
Smithsonite is a rare and variably coloured trigonal mineral which only rarely is found in well-formed crystals. The typical habit is as earthy botryoidal masses. Smithsonite occurs as a secondary mineral in the weathering or oxidation zone of zinc-bearing ore deposits.
It sometimes occurs as replacement bodies in carbonate rocks and as such may constitute zinc ore. The colour is close to Ajoite, and is an exceptionally rare material with an excellent polish. The recent discovery from Congo is a matrix Smithsonite mass deposit which is being mined and polished to perfection into standing freeform by us here in South Africa.
